Chihuahua Governor Maru Campos has launched a new sanitary protocol to combat the spread of cattle screwworm (Gusano Barrenador del Ganado) across the state's 67 municipalities. The strategy is managed by the newly formed State Emergency Group for Animal Health (GEESA) and focuses on three pillars: information, coordination, and operation.

To control the parasite, authorities have released approximately 14.97 million sterile flies between July 27 and August 11 using 54 terrestrial dispersion chambers in strategic locations. The state has also invested an extraordinary 81 million pesos into this response, supplementing previous sanitary funding.

Key components of the plan include the distribution of free medications, the establishment of a sanitary fence, the use of preventive compounds on newborn calves, and the distribution of detection kits. Additionally, officials are prioritizing the training and certification of specialized veterinarians in every municipality. While the outbreak primarily affects cattle, Senasica has noted that dogs are the second most affected animal group in Mexico. Authorities have warned pet owners to monitor animals closely and report suspected cases to Senasica.
