Invasive fly outbreaks and sterile‑fly response in Texas, Mé
Overview
The New World screwworm outbreak that began in Chiapas in late 2024 continues to spread. By early July 2026 more than 30 domestic animal cases were recorded in Texas and New Mexico, including two dogs. Veterinarians advise wound inspection, use of prescription flea‑and‑tick products that kill larvae, and prompt treatment. New reports from late July confirm additional infestations. In Mexico officials identified cases in dogs, cattle, horses and a homeless person in Matehuala, attributing the spread to a recent pause in sterile‑fly releases and increased cross‑border livestock movement. In the United States the Texas Animal Health Commission listed the parasite in 13 counties and 24 establishments, and New Mexico confirmed its first stray‑dog case in Lea County, leading to movement restrictions and USDA alerts for pet owners. Mexico inaugurated a binational sterile‑fly production facility in Metapa de Domínguez, Chiapas on 27 June 2026. Funded with roughly $60 million shared by Mexico and the United States, the plant will scale to release up to 100 million sterile flies per week, supplementing the existing Panama operation and supporting livestock trade across the border. The invasive pasture mealybug now occupies 70 Texas counties, threatening up to 35 million acres of rangeland. With no registered pesticide, management relies on early detection, grazing or hay harvest to reduce canopy density, and equipment sanitation. USDA continues to fund sterile‑male programs and monitor Hawaii for any spill‑over. In early July the USDA confirmed the first U.S. screwworm case in a three‑week‑old calf in Zavala County, Texas, bringing the total to 33 infections across Texas and New Mexico affecting cattle, goats and a pet dog. Officials stressed that the parasite poses an animal‑health, not a food‑safety, risk; infected animals are quarantined, inspected and treated before any meat enters the food supply.
