Agricultural damage in Spain rises due to wildfires and hailstorms

Agricultural sectors in Spain are facing significant losses due to extreme weather events. According to Agroseguro, wildfires in 2026 have already affected approximately 15,842 hectares of insured agricultural land. This figure represents one of the highest levels of damage recorded in the last decade, surpassed only by 2025. Preliminary estimates suggest that compensation for agricultural production damage in 2026 could exceed 2.1 million euros.

In addition to fire damage, severe hailstorms have impacted over 6,700 hectares of crops in the Aragon region. Huesca has been the most affected province, with significant damage to herbaceous crops such as corn and soy. Other areas, including Teruel and Zaragoza, have also reported losses in fruit, nuts, cereals, and vineyards. Nationally, storm-related damage is estimated to affect between 22,300 and 25,000 hectares of insured crops, with Castilla-La Mancha and Murcia also heavily impacted.

These environmental factors are expected to influence market dynamics, as reduced supply may lead to price increases for fruits and vegetables in the coming weeks.
