Spain wildfire crisis and agricultural emergency 2026

Overview

By mid-September 2026, Spain’s wildfire crisis continues to show significant environmental impact. As of September 12, the total area destroyed by wildfires since the start of the year reached 296,502 hectares, accounting for 45.1% of the total area burned across the European Union, according to the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS). While the total burned area remains roughly 3.5 times the annual average recorded since 2006, the current total is approximately 22.5% lower than levels recorded during the same period in 2025.

Spain currently ranks second in Europe for fire frequency with 442 recorded fires, trailing Italy (582) but ahead of France (360). The most critical period occurred in July, notably during the ‘Los Gayardos’ fire in Almeria, which resulted in 13 deaths. Recent localized incidents include the stabilization of a fire in Moguer, Huelva, and a fire in Benahavís, Malaga, which burned 329 hectares of pine forest and scrubland.

New incidents have emerged in Valencia and Valladolid. In Tuéjar, Valencia, a wildfire has burned approximately 690 hectares, threatening the Alto Turia Biosphere Reserve and the Benagéber reservoir. The blaze prompted the preventive evacuation of about 25 people and required approximately 200 emergency personnel, including the Military Emergencies Unit (UME). Two firefighters sustained minor injuries during the operation. In Íscar, Valladolid, authorities are investigating a July 14 fire that burned 178 hectares and caused structural damage to the Íscar Castle, a site of Cultural Interest (BIC).

Agricultural losses have also escalated, with Agroseguro reporting over 441 million euros in insurance indemnities due to extreme weather. Emerging threats to infrastructure persist; in the Peñas de Riglos area, experts warn that the loss of vegetation may compromise water supplies.
