Overview

By early September 2026, Spain’s wildfire and agricultural crisis has reached critical levels. Data from the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) indicates that more than 297,000 hectares have been burned by forest fires so far this year, representing 48.1% of the total area affected within the European Union. Between January 1 and August 20, the country experienced 43 major fires. As of September 9, the total burned area is estimated at approximately 296,502 hectares, a figure roughly 3.5 times the annual average recorded since 2006. The Niebla fire in Huelva remains one of the most devastating in the country this century. To address these incidents, MITECO has launched an interactive report to track fires and manage the impacts of climate change. In Barcelona, emergency services successfully extinguished a fire in northern Collserola that began on August 25 near the Alta de les Roquetes road, affecting 54.5 hectares. Following containment, the Barcelona City Council deactivated its Municipal Action Plan. Previously, a University of León study revealed that approximately 30% of the burned area—roughly 88,801 hectares—is within protected natural spaces, including the Natura 2000 network. Significant impacts were noted in the Valle de Iruelas Natural Reserve and through the Niebla fire in Andalucía, which destroyed over 33,000 hectares. While the industry association Apromabi attributed the Niebla fire to “political apathy and a lack of preventive maintenance,” experts continue to warn of secondary disasters like flash floods and soil erosion. Agricultural losses have also escalated, with Agroseguro reporting over 441 million euros in insurance indemnities due to extreme weather, including wildfires, droughts, and hail, marking August as the most severe month for claims on record.
