Agricultural initiatives drive poverty reduction in Northern Nigeria

Agricultural initiatives in Northern Nigeria are driving significant economic improvements for rural populations. The Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) project, supported by the World Bank, has reportedly lifted approximately 41 percent of local farmers out of poverty across 19 northern states and the Federal Capital Territory. Dr. Joy Iganya Agege, the ACReSAL Task Team Lead, stated that additional financing is being sought to scale up the project's successful design rather than redesigning it due to poor performance.

In Jigawa State, rural women rice processors in the Gwaram and Taura Local Government Areas have reported similar benefits through support from the Sasakawa Africa Association (SAA) and the state government. The intervention has provided processing equipment, technical training, and improved production practices. Local processors noted that the transition from manual labor to mechanized processing has reduced physical drudgery, increased the quality and marketability of rice, and enabled greater financial independence for women in communities such as Kwalam, Chuwasu, and Kaura.
