Agricultural development initiatives in Nigeria

Overview

Agricultural development programs in Nigeria are focusing on enhancing productivity and reducing poverty through training, mechanization, and value chain support.

In Niger and Kogi States, the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) assisted Value Chain Development Programme (VCDP) has implemented training for rice farmers in Katcha to adopt modern agronomic practices. In Kogi, the program has supported over 3,000 women in the rice and cassava sectors, helping them transition from subsistence farming to agribusiness through improved processing and financial literacy training.

In Northern Nigeria, the World Bank-supported Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) project has reportedly lifted approximately 41 percent of local farmers out of poverty across 19 states and the Federal Capital Territory. Concurrently, in Jigawa State, support from the Sasakawa Africa Association and the state government has provided rice processors with mechanized equipment and technical training, which local participants noted has increased marketability and reduced manual labor.
