Agricultural initiatives launched in Senegal and Cameroon
In Senegal, Agriculture Minister Cheikhou Oumar Ba has announced a new mechanism to coordinate the sale of harvests. The initiative aims to connect farmers, banks, the private sector, and state services to prevent post-harvest losses. This follows reports of significant losses in Podor and the presence of 50,000 tonnes of local rice stuck in warehouses in the Saint-Louis region. An interministerial meeting is scheduled for October 22 to secure funds for purchasing agricultural products.
In Cameroon, the government is seeking partners to fund the 23.2 billion FCFA Kaélé Agro-industrial Complex (CIAK) in the Far North region. Despite studies conducted twelve years ago, the project has yet to launch. Once operational, the 30-hectare site is intended to process 73,000 tonnes of raw materials annually, including sorghum, maize, onions, and meat, to leverage the region's agropastoral potential.
