Terrace and Abbotsford face developments in municipal recreation projects

The City of Terrace has expressed support for a proposal by the Northwest Sports Dome Society to conduct a feasibility study for an indoor sports dome. The proposed 150-metre by 55-metre artificial turf structure would be built on donated city land. The project aims to provide year-round facilities for soccer, softball, rugby, and cricket, potentially utilizing federal grant money from a $1 billion sports facility program.

In Abbotsford, the Agricultural Land Commission (ALC) has rejected a city application to use protected land for a new recreation park. The proposal sought to develop soccer fields and baseball diamonds near the University of the Fraser Valley in exchange for non-protected land. The ALC denied the request, citing concerns that approving the exclusion could create a ‘slippery slope’ for other properties along the ALC border.
