Agricultural modernization efforts expand in Madagascar and Togo
In Madagascar’s Itasy region, farmers are adopting liquid biofertilizers made from local plants and manure to combat soil erosion and rising input costs. Research by the University of Antananarivo and Cirad highlights that the region's ferrallitic soils are prone to nutrient loss and degradation due to runoff and demographic pressure, which reduces available land for fallow periods.
Meanwhile, Togo has implemented a multi-pronged agricultural transformation strategy between 2020 and 2025. This initiative includes the deployment of over 500 tractors and 180 power tillers, the construction of two regional mechanization centers, and the development of 16 new crop varieties. The program also focuses on technical support through 784 advisors and the registration of over 10,600 cooperatives to improve productivity and reduce manual labor.
