Agricultural modernization in Madagascar and Togo
Overview
Agricultural development efforts have focused on sustainability and mechanization in Madagascar and Togo. In Madagascar’s Itasy region, farmers are utilizing liquid biofertilizers derived from local plants and manure to address soil erosion and nutrient loss caused by demographic pressure and runoff.
Togo has implemented a broad agricultural transformation strategy involving the deployment of machinery, such as tractors and power tillers, and the development of new crop varieties. The nation is also working to align its domestic policies with the African Union’s Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP) to increase food production and intra-African trade.
To support these goals, Togo is prioritizing rural infrastructure through the Rural Track Support Programme (PAPR), which aims to connect production basins for cotton, coffee, and cocoa to markets. While significant progress was made in completing rural tracks between 2021 and 2023, projected funding for these tracks is expected to decrease from 32 billion FCFA in 2025 to 23 billion FCFA in 2026.
