Agricultural producers advised to prepare for heavy rains and El Niño

Agricultural authorities in Paraguay and Argentina are advising producers to adjust management strategies due to upcoming weather patterns and the El Niño phenomenon.

In Paraguay, the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG) issued a rain forecast for September 9–11, 2026, predicting significant rainfall, particularly in the southern and eastern Oriental regions. Producers are urged to complete open-field tasks such as fertilization and phytosanitary applications before the rains to prevent nutrient washout. Additionally, monitoring for fungal and bacterial diseases is recommended for crops including corn, wheat, cassava, and vegetables. Soil moisture levels are currently favorable for soybean germination.

In Argentina, experts note that while soil water reserves are high (70–80%), the El Niño forecast predicts above-normal rainfall. Mariano Cicchino of INTA Chascomús advises that while this can boost productivity, it also increases risks of flooding, waterlogging, and pests. Recommendations include minimizing soil disturbance to preserve ground structure and aiming for early planting dates to optimize water availability.
