Agricultural sectors in Paraguay and Argentina focus on genetics and seed legislation

In Paraguay, the integration of high-value bovine genetics has become a primary driver for transforming the livestock sector. Decades of selective breeding and collaboration between producers and genetic improvement centers have enhanced the productivity, reproductive efficiency, and environmental adaptation of the national cattle herd. These genetic advancements contribute to better fertility rates, faster weight gain, and improved meat quality, helping the industry meet demanding international standards for carcass yield and meat uniformity.

In Argentina, discussions regarding a new seed law are progressing through meetings between production entities and seed companies. Alfredo Paseyro, executive director of the Asociación de Semilleros Argentinos, stated that the goal is to reach a consensus to present to the government and Congress. Key points of contention include the regulation of ‘uso propio’ (the practice of farmers saving seeds for the next season) and Argentina’s potential adherence to the UPOV 91 convention. Negotiations are currently focused on major crops, including soy, wheat, and rice, as the country seeks to improve agricultural competitiveness and market access.
