The Paraguayan livestock sector is transitioning from addressing technical gaps to pursuing productivity through strategic investment and genetic improvement. While historical data indicated low adoption of reproductive practices, recent efforts focus on technical intensification to support the recomposition of the national cattle herd.

Martín Céspedes, president of the Technical Commission of the Asociación Rural del Paraguay (ARP), has emphasized that the priority should be maximizing production from the existing reproductive base rather than simply increasing the number of breeding cows. This strategy involves sustaining the entire process from service to weaning. New analyses from the ‘Inteligencia Reproductiva’ session suggest that the actual pregnancy rate is approximately 57% when calculated based on females that effectively reach service, providing a more precise figure than previous estimates of 50% to 52%. Céspedes noted that improving data collection and monitoring technical losses after gestation diagnosis are critical for growth.

Recent data indicates this strategic shift is underway, as cattle slaughter fell by 21% between January and August compared to the same period in 2025. This decline is largely driven by a reduction in the slaughter of cows and heifers, signaling a deliberate retention of female cattle to rebuild the herd. This production focus coincides with high international demand; Paraguay reached a record beef export value of US$ 7,488 per ton in September, while monthly purchases from the United States increased by nearly 38%.

To address these challenges, the CEA Congress, scheduled for October 19 and 20, will focus on breeding and genetic improvement to transform retained females into increased calf production.
