Agrigento health authority seeks damages over penile prosthesis investigation
The Provincial Health Authority (ASP) of Agrigento has announced it will seek compensation for both financial loss and reputational damage following a judicial investigation into penile prosthesis implants at the San Giovanni di Dio hospital.
The investigation by the Agrigento Public Prosecutor's Office concerns over 100 procedures that were allegedly charged to the National Health Service without meeting the required essential levels of care (LEA). Authorities suspect an unusual surge in surgeries driven by social media promotions attracting patients from outside the region.
Alessandro Delle Donne, the extraordinary commissioner of the ASP, stated that the agency helped uncover the anomaly, previously dismissed one of the suspects, and is cooperating fully with the judiciary. The ASP plans to file a report with the Regional Prosecutor of the Court of Auditors and intends to join the criminal proceedings as a civil party once legal requirements are met.
