Medical fraud investigation in Agrigento

Overview

The Agrigento Prosecutor’s Office has launched an investigation into five doctors at the San Giovanni di Dio hospital regarding alleged fraud involving penile prosthesis implants. Authorities are examining over 100 procedures performed between 2018 and 2024, which were reportedly billed to the National Health Service (SSN) despite patients allegedly lacking the clinical requirements for public coverage. Investigators suspect that social media advertising may have attracted a high volume of patients from outside the Sicily region to undergo these high-cost surgeries.

In response to the investigation, the Provincial Health Authority (ASP) of Agrigento announced its intention to join the criminal proceedings as a civil party. The ASP is seeking compensation for both financial loss and reputational damage, and plans to report the matter to the Court of Auditors to assess the impact on public finances. Carabinieri from the NAS of Palermo have seized 112 clinical records as part of the inquiry into charges including criminal association, embezzlement, and forgery.
