Agrinio: Deputy mayor and off-duty officer disrupt jewelry theft
In Agrinio, a criminal organization specializing in phone fraud has been disrupted following a targeted incident involving an elderly victim. The perpetrators, posing as accountants, convinced an elderly man to place 5,000 euros in cash and a jewelry box containing valuables worth approximately 25,000 euros in his yard.
The suspects arrived on a motorcycle to collect the items. Their suspicious behavior—specifically wearing heavy winter jackets despite high summer temperatures—caught the attention of Lambros Skoufis, an off-duty police officer and local deputy mayor. Skoufis intervened by disabling the motorcycle's engine and removing the keys to prevent their escape.
Following a brief pursuit, police arrested one of the suspects. The stolen jewelry and cash were recovered and returned to the owner. The arrested individual faces felony charges including participation in a criminal organization, fraud, and violence against public officials.
