Agrivoltaics integrates solar energy production with agriculture
Agrivoltaics, also known as dual-use solar, is an emerging practice that integrates solar energy production with agricultural activities such as crop cultivation and livestock grazing. By designing solar projects to accommodate farming beneath or around panels, communities can meet energy demands while preserving farmland and supporting local economies.
Research indicates that this coexistence offers mutual benefits. For agriculture, solar panels can provide shade for livestock and protect crops from extreme weather, potentially boosting yields by creating cooler, more stable environments. For energy production, the transpiration from plants can cool the ground surface, which helps maintain higher solar panel efficiency compared to installations over concrete or bare soil.
Despite its potential, agrivoltaics is still in its early stages, representing less than 1% of global solar capacity as of mid-2025. However, experts suggest that widespread implementation, such as utilizing just 1% of available agricultural land in Europe, could significantly help regions meet renewable energy targets.
