Agrocalidad intensifies Moko disease containment in Los Ríos

Agrocalidad has intensified technical operations across the 13 cantons of Los Ríos, Ecuador, to contain the spread of Moko disease (Ralstonia solanacearum Race 2) in banana and plantain crops.

Between February and August 2026, the agency conducted phytosanitary surveillance over 105,531 hectares and monitored 6,072 hectares. Technical teams inspected 663 agricultural properties and provided training to 1,238 producers and workers on symptom recognition and biosecurity measures.

The containment strategy, part of the Action Plan for the Control of Moko, includes continuous surveillance, sample collection, outbreak management, and the implementation of strict biosecurity protocols. Agrocalidad is collaborating with the National Institute of Agricultural Research (INIAP), academic institutions, international organizations, and the private sector to strengthen the technical response. Authorities emphasize that farmers must maintain strict biosecurity, such as disinfecting tools and vehicles, to prevent the bacteria from reaching disease-free production zones.
