Moko disease outbreak in Ecuador
Overview
Agrocalidad has intensified technical operations across 13 cantons in the Los Ríos province of Ecuador to contain the spread of Moko disease (Ralstonia solanacearum Race 2) in banana and plantain crops.
Between February and August 2026, the agency conducted phytosanitary surveillance over 105,531 hectares and monitored 6,072 hectares. Technical teams inspected 663 agricultural properties and provided training to 1,238 producers and workers regarding symptom recognition and biosecurity measures.
The containment strategy includes continuous surveillance, sample collection, outbreak management, and the implementation of strict biosecurity protocols. Agrocalidad is collaborating with the National Institute of Agricultural Research (INIAP), academic institutions, international organizations, and the private sector to strengthen the technical response.
