Agroecology and soil restoration initiatives expand in Chile

Agricultural experts and community networks in Chile are advancing agroecological practices and soil restoration efforts across the Ñuble and Biobío regions. Dr. Francisco Beluzán Flores of INIA Carillanca recently participated in a technical tour as part of a Diploma in Agroecology. The tour focused on sustainable production systems, including organic farming, soil management, and renewable energy use. A key stop was San Nicolás, recognized as Chile’s first agroecological commune, where participants examined horticultural greenhouses and vermicompost systems used to enhance soil fertility.

In a parallel effort, the Community Agroecological Restoration Network—comprising Angol, Renaico, and Collipulli—is celebrating one year of promoting integral restoration of soils and watersheds. This network integrates local knowledge with social and solidarity economies to address socio-environmental issues. The initiative emphasizes that restoring landscapes requires organized communities and a holistic understanding of the connection between water, soil, forests, and people to build more resilient territories.
