Sustainable soil management initiatives in Chile

Overview

Efforts to improve soil management and sustainable agriculture in Chile have progressed through both policy development and community-led practical applications.

The Center for Soil Research and Ecosystem Functions of Chile (CISFECh) initiated formal policy advocacy by releasing a brief titled ‘From SIRSD-S to SIGESS: the need for a measurable and transferable data infrastructure for sustainable soil management in Chile’. This initiative aims to establish a data infrastructure to support the Incentive System for Sustainable Management of Agricultural Soils (SIGESS) and facilitate scientific dialogue with policymakers.

Complementing these policy efforts, agroecological and restoration initiatives have expanded at the regional level. In the Ñuble and Biobío regions, technical programs have focused on organic farming and vermicompost systems to enhance soil fertility. Additionally, the Community Agroecological Restoration Network has completed one year of promoting the integral restoration of soils and watersheds by integrating local knowledge with social and solidarity economies to build territorial resilience.
