AHER urges urgent energy investments in Honduras

Eduardo Bennaton, president of the Asociación de Energía Renovable (AHER), has warned that the electrical sector in Honduras may face significant challenges by 2027. To mitigate these risks and ensure service stability and quality, Bennaton emphasized the urgent need to accelerate investments, particularly in distributed battery storage systems.

Bennaton noted that while Honduras possesses substantial renewable potential, including 2,500 megawatts from hydroelectric sources alone, the country must act now to prepare for future scenarios. He pointed out that electricity-related costs have already risen, increasing from approximately 10 percent in the first two quarters of the year to nearly 13 percent in the third quarter.

Furthermore, the association highlighted a competitive gap, noting that neighboring Guatemala has already moved forward with bidding processes for electrical sector investments, whereas Honduras has yet to initiate similar tenders or finalize relevant legislative reforms.
