Ahmed Touizi elected President of Morocco's Chamber of Representatives

Ahmed Touizi, a member of the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM), has been elected as the new President of the Moroccan Chamber of Representatives. In a plenary session held on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, Touizi secured 220 votes, defeating the opposition candidate Driss El Azami El Idrissi of the Justice and Development Party (PJD), who received 59 votes. Out of 369 votes cast, 90 were declared invalid.

The election marks a significant shift in the Moroccan parliamentary landscape following the September 23 legislative elections. The PAM, which holds 97 seats, now leads the majority coalition, while the National Rally of Liberty and Progress (RNI) has moved into the opposition. Touizi, who previously led the PAM parliamentary group, pledged to treat both the majority and opposition equally and to uphold the Constitution and parliamentary regulations.

The session, overseen by interim president Abdelaziz Abba, also highlighted political fragmentation, as the opposition failed to agree on a unified candidate and several members of the left-wing alliance abstained. The election is part of the broader process of establishing the institutional framework for the new 2026-2031 legislative term.
