PAM leads 2026 elections amid social demands and internal's
Overview
Following the September 23, 2026, legislative elections, the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM) emerged as the leading political force with 97 seats. The National Rally of Independents (RNI) obtained 66 seats, the Istiqlal Party 65, and the Justice and Development Party 54. Together, the three parties from the previous governing majority hold a majority in the House of Representatives with 228 out of 395 seats.
On October 13, 2026, Ahmed Touizi, a leader from PAM, was elected President of the Moroccan House of Representatives for the 2026-2031 term. Touizi secured 220 votes, defeating the opposition candidate from the Justice and Development Party, Idriss al-Azmi al-Idrissi, who received 59 votes. Of the 369 votes cast, 90 were declared invalid. The election session was marked by the absence of 26 deputies, including Prime Minister Fatima Zahra Mansouri, and organizational confusion regarding canceled votes. Following the election, the House was scheduled to hold a general session on October 14 to elect members of the Bureau and chairs of permanent parliamentary committees.
Internal disciplinary actions have also intensified. The National Arbitration and Ethics Committee suspended Mounir Limouri, the mayor of Tangier and regional secretary for the Tangier-Assilah prefecture, from all party structures. This follows a judicial investigation into alleged electoral fraud in the Tangier-Asilah constituency involving the theft and alteration of ballots. Limouri has been placed in pretrial detention. While PAM leadership initially characterized the allegations as a ‘political conspiracy,’ the party maintains that its disciplinary procedure is independent of criminal liability.
Additionally, PAM has officially terminated its political alliance and ties with the RNI in the Chtouka Ait Baha province, citing the need to maintain independent decision-making across all territorial communes in the region.
