Ahmet Davutoğlu Dissolves Gelecek Party and Leaves Active Politics
Former Turkish prime minister and foreign‑minister Ahmet Davutoğlu announced the dissolution of the Gelecek Party (Future Party), which he founded on 12 December 2019 and which held four seats in the Turkish parliament after entering the 2023 election as part of the Millet Alliance. Davutoğlu said the decision was taken to avoid being part of a “polluted political climate” and stressed that it was “not a surrender but a moral distance”. He also declared that he is withdrawing from party politics and will continue to work on issues such as education, science, culture, economy and diplomacy outside a party framework.
The party’s four MPs will remain in parliament as independents within the New Way Group and will not join other parties. Following the closure, speculation has arisen about possible mergers among other conservative parties (Yeniden Refah, Saadet, DEVA) and about the future affiliations of the former Gelecek MPs, but no official moves have been confirmed.
Davutoğlu’s announcement has been reported by numerous Turkish media outlets and has sparked debate about the state of Turkey’s political system and the prospects for a new conservative alignment.
