AI adoption in Dutch SMEs remains superficial and lacks strategic data foundations

Research and industry analysis indicate that while artificial intelligence adoption is widespread among Dutch small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), its application remains largely superficial and lacks strategic integration.

A report by digital agency Fingerspitz reveals that most marketers use AI for low-level tasks such as brainstorming (61%), copywriting (58%), and creating visuals (47%). However, deeper applications like campaign optimization and targeting are utilized by only 20%. Furthermore, only 8% of companies view AI as a vital component of their long-term strategy, and 65% report that AI usage is ad hoc or poorly documented.

Technical challenges also hinder successful implementation. Many organizations struggle because they lack a robust data foundation. Without structured, accessible, and centralized data architecture, advanced AI models cannot function effectively. The tendency to launch isolated AI projects within specific departments—such as marketing or logistics—creates innovation silos that prevent scalability and reliable outcomes. Experts suggest that sustainable success requires breaking down these silos by integrating business operations with information technology and investing in comprehensive data engineering.
