Global SME and enterprise AI adoption trends

Overview

Artificial intelligence adoption among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) is characterized by a shift from superficial task automation toward a focus on governance and human integration. In the Netherlands, research indicates that while AI usage is widespread for low-level tasks like copywriting and brainstorming, it often lacks strategic integration. Many Dutch SMEs struggle with a lack of robust data foundations and tend to create innovation silos through isolated departmental projects. Only 8 percent of these companies view AI as a vital component of long-term strategy. In New Zealand, SME usage has risen to 59 percent, though businesses face barriers such as uncertainty regarding return on investment and a lack of knowledge about suitable tools.

As AI integrates further into global business and recruitment, new challenges regarding governance and workforce readiness have emerged. A 2026 Data & AI Barometer report indicates that 60 percent of companies lack a formal AI governance framework, often adopting technology faster than employees can adapt. This gap has led to the rise of “shadow AI,” where employees use unapproved tools to increase speed, creating data privacy and security vulnerabilities.

In the recruitment sector, the impact of AI is increasingly visible. Research from the Chartered Management Institute shows that 90 percent of UK managers have observed candidates using AI for CVs or cover letters, and nearly 60 percent suspect AI use during virtual interviews. While 89 percent of HR professionals note that AI saves time, only 24 percent believe it improves the quality of hiring.
