AI and knowledge gaps shape the cybersecurity landscape
Artificial intelligence is fundamentally altering the cybersecurity landscape for the Internet of Things (IoT). While attackers use AI to automate the discovery of vulnerabilities in large, heterogeneous device fleets, the technology is also becoming an essential defensive tool. Because many IoT devices lack the capacity for traditional endpoint security, experts suggest prioritizing device identity, protected connectivity, and network segmentation.
Effective defense relies on anomaly detection to identify communication deviations early, providing a critical time advantage. However, human oversight remains vital, as security teams must still manage evaluation, escalation, and countermeasures.
In Germany, a Bitkom survey highlights a significant knowledge gap regarding digital security terminology. While 75 percent of respondents claim to understand the term ‘cyberattack,’ only 43 percent feel they can explain ‘phishing,’ and just 35 percent claim to understand ‘malware.’ Experts note that familiarity with terms alone is insufficient for maintaining safety in daily digital life.
