The cybersecurity landscape is facing escalating systemic risks driven by advancements in artificial intelligence and evolving criminal tactics. AI-driven threats have expanded to include the ability of generative models to design new viruses and bypass programmed security constraints. Cybereason’s analysis of 405 Japanese companies found that while smaller enterprises update operating systems more frequently, they often lack defined IT policies, whereas large corporations struggle with updates due to legacy custom systems or organizational gaps. Furthermore, there has been a 942% increase in detections of fraudulent software designed to install malware. A new frontier of risk involves attacks targeting the permissions of autonomous AI agents to execute malicious commands, download code, or gain persistent remote access. Regional threats continue to expand. In Africa, Interpol warns that cybercrime is a systemic threat to the economy, with phishing, financial fraud, and identity theft being prominent. In Nigeria, Kaspersky reported blocking over 4.1 million online and on-device attack attempts during the first half of 2026, including 1.6 million online attacks involving malware such as spyware and password stealers. Password-stealer detections in Africa rose by 51 percent over the past year. In South and Southeast Asia, the situation is also intensifying.
