AI transforms e-commerce discovery and consumer shopping behavior

Artificial intelligence is fundamentally reshaping the e-commerce landscape, primarily by transforming the product discovery and research phases. While much focus remains on autonomous purchasing, current data suggests AI is most effective as a decision-making tool. A study of marketplace shoppers found that while 58% use AI for product research, only 17% are comfortable allowing AI to complete transactions directly.

Shopify executives reported that AI-driven search can boost conversions by 80%, noting that users searching via large language models are 2.5 times more likely to land directly on a product page. This shift moves the competitive focus for brands from traditional search engine rankings to being selected for AI-generated shortlists.

In the operational sector, Noibu has launched AI agents designed to automate e-commerce improvements by diagnosing and fixing technical or commercial issues with human oversight. Meanwhile, payment friction remains a critical hurdle; a PYMNTS report found that 47% of US shoppers who abandoned their carts did so because their preferred digital wallet option was unavailable, a trend particularly prevalent among Generation Z consumers.
