AI Art Museum Dataland Opens in Los Angeles

The DATALAND museum, billed as the world’s first venue dedicated to AI‑generated art, opened to the public on June 20 in downtown Los Angeles at The Grand LA complex. Co‑founded by media artist Refik Anadol and Efsun Erkilic, the museum spans roughly 2,500 sqm (about 25,000 sq ft) and features five galleries, an Infinity Room, a Data Pavilion and interactive installations.

Its debut exhibition, “Machine Dreams: Rainforest,” uses AI models trained on extensive ecological data to create evolving visual, audio and sensory experiences that simulate rainforest environments. Visitors can wear biosensing devices that capture physiological responses and influence the artwork in real time. The project is built on Google Cloud infrastructure, employing tools such as Gemini and Compute Engine, and operates on 87 % renewable energy.

Organizers say DATALAND aims to merge audience and artwork, offering a laboratory for exploring new art forms and announcing a forthcoming artist‑in‑residence program in partnership with Google Arts & Culture.
