Dataland AI museum gains investment, continues residency

Overview

The DATALAND museum opened on 20 June 2026 in downtown Los Angeles, occupying Frank Gehry’s Grand LA. Its inaugural exhibition, “Machine Dreams: Rainforest,” runs through 31 January 2027, immersing visitors in AI‑generated visuals, sound, scent and biometric‑responsive effects.

On 21 July 2026 the museum announced its first AI Artist Residency. Four artists—Maya Man (NY), computational designer Lucia Rebolino, Los Angeles artist Penny Slinger, and inclusive‑arts practitioner Jess Starns—were selected from over 500 applicants. Each receives a $25,000 grant and will develop work with Refik Anadol Studio using DATALAND’s Large Nature Model, a generative AI trained on scientific nature datasets. The residency runs through December and will culminate in a public showcase of immersive installations, talks and discussions on AI’s cultural role.

On 27 July 2026 Turkish conglomerate Yıldız Holding announced a $1.25 million investment in DATALAND. The partnership underscores the museum’s ambition to expand internationally, with planned sites in London, Dubai, Riyadh, Hong Kong and Seoul, and includes a bespoke digital artwork for Yıldız Holding’s collection.

Together, the exhibition, residency and new funding reinforce DATALAND’s mission as a collaborative platform for artists, researchers, scientists and technologists exploring AI as a cultural medium.
