AI boom drives 322 percent surge in database developer demand

The IT labor market is undergoing a significant transformation driven by artificial intelligence. While general demand in the IT sector saw a slight decline in the second quarter of 2026, demand for database developers surged by 322 percent due to the AI boom. This shift highlights a growing need for expertise in AI, system design, and architecture rather than purely technical programming.

In Germany, a structural paradox exists where approximately 137,000 IT specialists are missing despite high unemployment in other sectors. A survey by Bitkom indicates that 80 percent of companies expect an increased shortage of skilled workers, with 42 percent specifically seeking AI expertise. Conversely, 27 percent of companies anticipate job cuts due to technological advancements, and one in four startups has already avoided new hires because of AI applications.

Technological advancements are also enabling automated software development. Recent tests show that large language models, specifically Google Gemini and Anthropic Claude, can successfully transform large datasets, such as CSV files with 5,000 transactions, into functional offline applications without manual coding. Google is further integrating these capabilities through Google Sheets Canvas, allowing users to convert spreadsheet data into interactive mini-apps.
