Netherlands ranks as second-largest European exporter of AI equipment

The Netherlands has become the second-largest European exporter of equipment used for the development and application of artificial intelligence, trailing only Germany, according to a report by credit insurer Atradius.

Accounting for 7 percent of global exports in AI-related goods, the Netherlands holds the eleventh position worldwide with an export value exceeding 80 billion euros. This success is driven largely by the country's semiconductor manufacturing capabilities, specifically through ASML, which is the world's largest exporter of chip-making machines. Additionally, the Netherlands plays a significant logistical role in the re-export of network hardware such as routers and switches.

The report highlights that the global AI market remains highly concentrated, with Asian economies accounting for 65 percent of exports. Economist Theo Smid of Atradius noted that this concentration makes the supply chain vulnerable to geopolitical tensions and trade disruptions, emphasizing the need for Europe to strengthen its own technological capacity and diversify suppliers.
