AI infrastructure boom drives $61 billion bond market and nuclear energy demand

The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence infrastructure is driving significant shifts in energy and finance markets. Wall Street is increasingly packaging data center income into bonds, with outstanding data-center securitizations growing from $4 billion in 2020 to $61 billion by July 2026. These financial products leverage the reliable electricity consumption of computing customers as collateral.

To meet surging electricity demands, interest in nuclear energy—specifically small modular reactors (SMRs)—is rising. Companies like NuScale Power and Oklo are competing in this space, though they employ different strategies: NuScale focuses on traditional grid integration, while Oklo targets direct sales to data center operators. While Oklo holds a significantly higher market valuation, both companies face execution risks in the early commercial stages.

However, the data center boom is also creating localized environmental and infrastructure challenges. In the United States, projects have faced scrutiny over water usage. In El Reno, Oklahoma, a Bitcoin mining facility owned by Athlon Blockchain Technology was linked to a leak that wasted over three million gallons of water and faced condemnation due to safety code violations.
