Tech giants are securing 100 % renewable power‑purchase agreements—Meta, AWS and others report full renewable supply for many sites—while the UN Environment Programme urges accounting of AI’s energy, water and mineral use. Premium rates persist for scarce high‑performance compute, and new hardware approaches such as silicon‑photonic chips and software platforms that automatically port inference workloads aim to improve performance‑per‑watt further. Environmental concerns remain acute, with researchers warning that, without carbon‑capture interventions, data‑centre emissions could quadruple by 2030.
