AI-driven scams prompt new security measures in Singapore and Sarawak

Authorities in Southeast Asia are addressing the rise of sophisticated scams powered by artificial intelligence. In Sarawak, Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin warned that scammers are using AI to mimic the voices and images of family members, such as children or grandchildren, to deceive elderly victims. Lee noted that these technological advances allow criminals to wipe out a person's savings within hours and urged the public to independently verify any unexpected requests for money through trusted communication channels.

In Singapore, the Cyber Security Agency (CSA) has launched a National Simulated Scams Exercise to build public resilience. Supported by the Ministry of Home Affairs, the six-month pilot program uses simulated, AI-enabled robocalls to mimic government impersonation scams. The exercise allows volunteers to experience social engineering tactics firsthand in a controlled environment, helping them recognize the nuances of voice-based fraud and deepfake impersonation.
