AI-enabled X-ray technology to boost TB and lung cancer detection in India

Medical experts at the NAPCON 2026 conference highlighted the potential for artificial intelligence to transform the early detection of tuberculosis (TB) and lung cancer in India. By analyzing chest X-rays and CT scans, AI-powered software can identify suspicious abnormalities, prioritize high-risk patients, and accelerate the diagnostic process.

In Nagaland, the state has been allocated over 60 AI-enabled portable handheld X-ray machines to strengthen TB screening under the National Tuberculosis Elimination Programme (NTEP). These devices are intended to help identify undetected cases, particularly among vulnerable groups such as malnourished individuals and those aged 60 and above. In Dimapur, which holds the highest TB burden in the state, screening efforts are being extended to individuals aged 14 and older.

With India accounting for approximately 26 percent of estimated global TB cases in 2024, experts suggest that AI-assisted screening could be vital for underserved areas and mobile diagnostic programs. While AI can flag patterns for further investigation, medical professionals emphasize that confirmatory testing remains necessary for diagnosis.
