AI integration in tuberculosis screening

Overview

Researchers and medical experts are exploring the use of artificial intelligence to enhance tuberculosis (TB) detection and reduce costs in Asia.

In the Philippines, a decision-analytic model developed by Ateneo de Manila University researchers suggests that AI-assisted chest X-ray interpretation could lower annual screening costs from approximately $20 to $15 per person. This technology aims to address diagnostic delays in rural areas where radiologists are scarce.

In India, experts at the NAPCON 2026 conference highlighted AI’s potential to transform early detection for both TB and lung cancer by analyzing X-rays and CT scans. In the state of Nagaland, over 60 AI-enabled portable handheld X-ray machines have been allocated to the National Tuberculosis Elimination Programme to strengthen screening among vulnerable populations, including malnourished individuals and the elderly.
