AI Expands Into Freight Industry, Creating New Roles for Truckers and Logistics Workers

Artificial intelligence is moving out of traditional tech hubs and entering sectors such as freight and logistics, opening up new job opportunities for truckers and other non‑tech workers. AI tools are being used to improve route planning, fuel efficiency, maintenance scheduling and freight matching, and many of these roles do not require a computer‑science degree.

At the FreightWaves Supply Chain AI Symposium, Uber Freight CTO Val Marchevsky highlighted how AI is shifting from pilot projects to measurable return on investment. He stressed focusing on core operational pain points, deploying ensemble models for document processing that cut manual work by more than half, testing new models in “shadow mode” before live use, and keeping humans in the loop to manage risk. These practices aim to deliver real‑world business value across the freight network.
