AI transformation in freight logistics

Entities: Artificial intelligence · FedEx Corp · United Parcel Service (UPS)

Overview

By mid‑July 2026 Trimble confirmed it was working with Goldman Sachs on a potential sale of its transportation and logistics unit, underscoring how AI‑driven capabilities are weakening the traditional moats of legacy TMS vendors. At the same time Logistaas rolled out the Averroes AI suite, embedding automated document extraction, risk assessment, compliance checks and an AI‑assistant directly into its platform; the suite is now deployed in more than 80 countries, promising faster, more consistent operations for freight forwarders.

Within weeks, Uber Freight’s CTO reported that AI models had moved from pilots to measurable ROI, halving manual document processing and improving routing, fuel efficiency and maintenance planning, while creating new non‑technical roles for drivers and logistics staff.

The wave of adoption broadened in early August as major carriers FedEx and UPS announced network‑wide AI expansions to optimise routing, demand forecasting, warehouse automation and delivery accuracy. Analysts project the third‑party logistics market to grow to US$2.43 trillion by 2033, driven by e‑commerce pressure and AI‑enabled real‑time analysis of shipment, weather and traffic data that cuts costs and lifts service levels.
