AI data center expansion drives global electricity and grid demand
The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence is driving a massive surge in global data center demand, creating significant strain on electricity grids and water resources. The International Energy Agency (IEA) projects that global data center electricity consumption will approximately double from 485 TWh in 2025 to 950 TWh by 2030, with AI-focused facilities expected to triple their consumption in that period.
This growth is triggering diverse regional responses. In Canada, policymakers are debating how to ensure data center expansion does not shift electricity costs to residential consumers, with provinces like Ontario and Saskatchewan considering premium rates or requiring developers to provide their own power. In the United States, New York State implemented a moratorium on new construction in July, while Texas halted new grid connection approvals in August pending an audit. Meanwhile, OpenAI has announced Project Camellia, a 3.2 GW project in Georgia involving over $30 billion in investment.
Beyond power, the industry faces challenges regarding water usage and community opposition. Much of a data center’s water footprint is indirect, stemming from the electricity generation process. Additionally, developers are increasingly facing local pushback regarding noise, land use, and potential electricity rate hikes, leading some to explore on-site power solutions and more transparent community engagement strategies.
