AI hardware faces supply constraints amid geopolitical shifts

The artificial intelligence industry is facing growing physical and geopolitical constraints within the hardware supply chain. Nvidia is reportedly evaluating reduced high-bandwidth memory (HBM) configurations for its next-generation Rubin Ultra chip due to difficulties in securing sufficient supply. This supply pressure is linked to SK Hynix, which is considering a stake sale of its Chongqing manufacturing plant because US export controls prevent the facility from being modernized.

In China, the government is increasing support for domestic AI chipmakers to achieve greater technological independence and minimize reliance on foreign technology.

At the fundamental hardware level, researchers at TSMC have reported a gate-dielectric advancement aimed at developing transistor architectures that move beyond conventional silicon. Additionally, the Situational Awareness fund has deployed approximately $500 million into Source Foundry, a company attempting to challenge ASML's monopoly on advanced lithography.
