AI identifies four migraine phenotypes without using pain data

Researchers have developed artificial intelligence models capable of identifying migraine patients without using any data regarding their actual head pain. The study, published in the journal Neurology, suggests that migraines may not be a single uniform condition but rather a spectrum of distinct biological and clinical subtypes.

Led by Antonios Danelakis at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, the team utilized data from the Trøndelag Health Study in Norway. The AI approach moved beyond symptom-based recognition to create a data-driven disease profile using generalized health characteristics and biological signatures.

The research identified four specific migraine phenotypes. These subtypes are distinguished by patterns such as neck pain, pain distribution, and psychological distress. This development is significant for the medical field because migraine diagnosis currently relies heavily on patient self-reporting, as there are no established blood markers or imaging techniques to definitively confirm a diagnosis.
