OpenAI and Anthropic CEOs warn UN of AI risks FAST-MOVING

CEOs of OpenAI and Anthropic testified before the UN Security Council, warning that advanced artificial intelligence poses existential risks to humanity if not managed through international cooperation and strict safety standards. Sam Altman cautioned that rapid AI development could lead to a loss of human control over the future, while Dario Amodei warned that mismanagement could result in catastrophic outcomes, including the use of AI to engineer biological weapons.

Both executives called for global safeguards and democratic oversight to prevent the concentration of power within a few companies or nations. Amodei specifically committed Anthropic to slowing its development pace as necessary to ensure the safety of new releases.

In contrast, US officials, including White House Science Adviser Michael Kratsios and President Donald Trump, expressed opposition to new global governance structures or pauses in development, emphasizing the need to maintain a competitive advantage in the AI race. Meanwhile, UK officials indicated plans to prioritize AI control during the upcoming G20 presidency.
