However, Guterres has reiterated the need for stricter oversight, stating, ‘We cannot ignore the concerns being expressed, especially when they come from those on the front lines of AI development.’ He further emphasized that it is the ‘primary responsibility of every government to protect its citizens, even from the threats of AI.’

Public concern has intensified following the resignation of Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon over fears that developers believe AI could pose an existential threat by the end of the decade. Additionally, executives from major technology firms have called for a slowdown in the pace of AI development. In a recent press conference, Guterres also identified AI, alongside climate change, as an unforeseen existential risk to global peace and security.
