AI infrastructure boom drives data centre demand toward regional Australia
The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) and data centre infrastructure is driving developers toward regional Australia as metropolitan opposition grows. This shift is placing increased pressure on farmland and natural ecosystems, prompting calls for stricter oversight.
In Canberra, political leaders are signaling a need for greater scrutiny of these developments. Greens leader David Shoebridge indicated that the Labor government would no longer receive a “blank cheque” for proposals that compromise forests, threatened species, or agricultural land. This stance has found unexpected alignment with the Coalition, as opposition energy spokesman Dan Tehan welcomed the prospect of increased scrutiny for large-scale projects.
Under proposed national standards expected to be legislated by 2027, developers may be required to offset data centre electricity consumption through new renewable energy generation and firming capacity, such as batteries or gas, to maintain grid reliability.
