AI demand drives shifts in semiconductor strategy and global trade

The global artificial intelligence boom is driving significant shifts in semiconductor strategies, trade patterns, and industrial infrastructure. In Taiwan, the Ministry of Finance forecasts that total exports could surpass US$850 billion this year, fueled by robust demand for AI-related components. Within the chip sector, MediaTek has raised its target market share for data center ASIC chips to 15%–20% by 2027, opting for a system-level integration strategy that contrasts with Broadcom’s focus on pure chip supply.

In China, the AI surge is boosting trade, with July exports rising 23.9% year-on-year. Domestic companies are also pivoting toward local technology, with an estimated 46% of future AI computing budgets expected to be allocated to domestic chips. Meanwhile, Panasonic has seen its AI-related component business in Northeast Asia grow to 28% of its regional revenue, overtaking its traditional consumer appliance segment.

However, the rapid expansion of AI is creating new physical bottlenecks. In the United States, AI-related imports are projected to reach 23% of all imports by 2025. The critical shortage has shifted from advanced semiconductors to essential electrical infrastructure, such as transformers, switchgear, and grid-scale batteries, which are increasingly sourced from China to meet the massive power and cooling demands of modern data centers.
