AI infrastructure boom drives massive surge in global energy and data center demand

The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence is driving a massive surge in global electricity demand and infrastructure investment. Data center electricity consumption is projected to reach 557 TWh in 2025, with the potential for global capacity to exceed 500 gigawatts by 2030. This growth is fueling a multi-trillion dollar infrastructure super-cycle, with global data center investments expected to approach €1.47 trillion annually by 2030.

To meet these energy needs, the industry is pivoting toward nuclear power and on-site generation. Tech giants are increasingly securing power through direct contracts with nuclear utilities or by funding the restart of decommissioned reactors. In the United States, companies like Holtec and Constellation Energy are working to bring nuclear plants back online to provide reliable, carbon-free baseload power. Additionally, the data center fuel cell market is projected to reach $30 billion by 2030 as developers seek alternatives to traditional grid connections, which face significant bottlenecks and long wait times.

However, this expansion presents significant challenges. Increasing rack density—projected to reach 240-250 kilowatts—requires advanced cooling solutions like liquid immersion. Furthermore, the strain on aging electrical grids and the rising cost of energy pose risks to both stability and economic equity, sparking debates over whether large tech firms should bear the full cost of grid modernization.
