Google updates AI search to increase link visibility and expands news licensing

Google is implementing significant updates to its AI-driven search experiences, including AI Overviews and AI Mode, to increase the visibility of website links. The company is placing inline links more prominently and higher within AI-generated responses to ensure users can easily access original sources. New tests include a dedicated section at the top of certain responses featuring one or two official websites relevant to a specific task, accompanied by context explaining their utility.

To support publishers, Google is expanding its News AI pilot program, which now includes more than 400 publications worldwide. This licensing program compensates news organizations for using their enhanced content to develop AI features like article overviews and audio briefings. Additionally, Google is testing clickable links in AI Mode that lead to search profiles for creators and publishers.

These changes come amid concerns regarding declining web traffic. Data from Chartbeat indicates that news sites saw a 40% drop in traffic from Google between July 2025 and July 2026, a period marked by the rise of AI summaries. While Google aims to facilitate easier access to sources, industry experts note that the shift toward AI-generated synthesis may continue to impact traditional click-through rates.
